Which is best site for my rhododendron?

(Survey: Planting tips for rhododendrons )

In the wild, most rhododendrons are to be found on the dge of the forest. That is why these plants prefer a shady site. Some species (such as rhododendron yakushimanum, rhododendrons with small leaves, azalea mollis and azalea japonica) can tolerate the sun more easily than species with larger leaves. Yet, it is not advisable to plant rhododendrons in the full sun. The ideal site for your rhododendron is a site with filtered daylight. Therefore it is best not to plant your rhododendron at the foot of a tree with superficial roots, like a birch, because these roots take to much nourishment and water away from the rhododendron. A site amidst deep roots (for example: an oak tree) is perfect.
